What if I start telling you that Zac wanted to be a baker?. Surprised? me too. And just to back that up, he will be actually releasing a Cook book in fall 2017. He is indeed a multifaceted designer: Project Runway’s judge, designer of his own label and a bridal line for David’s Bridal and now creative director for British brand Brooks Brothers. Anything else?.

ZACCCCCCCCCCCCCZac was born in New York to an artist father and a corporate lawyer mother. At the age of 16 her mother suggested him to look for a job, and he was very certain on what he wanted to do: fashion design. He enrolled in Parsons School of Design and at the same time interned at Nicole Miller.

At the age of 18 he moved to London to study at the Central Saint Martins, where he was accepted right away. According to him, this was the turning point of his career and life: he met a lot of inspiring and motivating people such as designers and models and made connections that lasted until nowadays. “Back in those days all was very theatrical, with Galliano and Mc Queen around. Studying at the Central Saint Martins was very motivating but extremely competitive. There were portfolios and work disappearing from the lockers all the time. It was hard, but they pushed you to find your own voice and point of view.”
He launched his first line in 2001, in the context of September 11, which was extremely difficult but found his way through business partnerships. Puff Daddy and Tom Ford were there for him from the beginning and his first showroom was at his parents apartment’s living room.

He learnt about being a leader, collaborate with incredible teams, rely on others and the business side of fashion: merchandising, logistics, sales, profits, strategy.

ZACCCCCCCCC Tell us a bit more about the glow gown Claire Danes wore at the Met Gala.

«I’ve always been drawn into technology, I was dyslexic as a kid so I was more comfortable with numbers so I’ve always enjoyed tech as a hobby. This project was lots of fun. I found the optic fibre fabric in google!. Then I just needed to sort out the glow. We placed 10hr batteries in a small box that was stitched into the garment. It was super light, so it worked perfectly. We tested it with Claire beforehand, so she was comfortable and familiar with it. I’ve known Claire for many years, when we were teenagers. We lived close to each other in NY. Anna Wintour also suggested she should be the one wearing it.We got to the Ball in a van, so Claire was pretty much standing all the way. It was a great experience.»

What do you like the most about the Brook’s Brothers design project?.
-“I will do 4 seasons with them. Everything has a lot of detail, it’s clean and classic, involves a lot of craftsmanship. The collection its huge. It has somehow influenced me and how I design.”
Any advice for the aspiring designers?.
-“Read fashion books, go to the museums, watch movies from all times. Internships are extremely important. Work on your inspirational portfolio and find your own point of view. Be ready to be the face of your brand, the designer and also understand the business side of it.”
